Organic! Wink, Nudge

So, according to them, we'll have exacting standards for Organic unless it, you know, costs more than the other stuff. In that case, the engineered stuff is organic too.

So the effect could be that people could advertise food as organic when it really isn't, which would remove the market for the ingredients that really ARE organic.

What's the defense for this? How could they honestly make a case for this? Posted by Curt at February 22, 2003 03:14 AM

And, see, that's the thing. A Tyson rep was quoted saying essentially that they were hacked over this whole fiasco, which surprised me a bit. They said that they've gone through the strick guidance to become certified organic and that this sort of legislation with bottom the market in a hurry as companies flood shelves with false organic products. The question I haven't heard answered yet is this: What does it take for the price of organic feed to hit twice the price of non-organic feed? Where are we now? I should keep up with ag better than I do.

Maybe all it takes is for someone to undercut the highest-priced organic feed by half. Hell, maybe this George chickenfeed company that introduced it has an organic alternative that would be deliberately twice as expensive. But I don't know, I'm just blathering.
